New Prescribers at CCS

New Prescribers at CCS – for immediate release

Community Counseling Services is pleased to announce the addition of 5 new psychiatric prescribers at the Huron, Madison and Flandreau locations;  Dr. James Chiu, Dr. Clay Pavlis, Kelly McDermott-CNP – PMHCNP, Abbey Kitto-DNP and Paula Tofte-PMHNP. Pavlis, Kitto and Tofte are contract employees of Midwest Wellness Institute (MWI).

CCS is expanding their face-to-face psychiatric services while adding telepsych services in the Huron, Madison and Flandreau locations. The 3 MWI prescribers are all working within work from a team approach to treatment, so patients should never have to miss out on an appointment due to inclement weather or when a prescriber is out of the office due to illness, vacation, or additional training.

James Chiu

Dr. James L Chiu is a Psychiatry Specialist in South Dakota. He graduated with honors from University Of South Dakota School Of Medicine in 2010. Having more than 9 years of diverse experiences, especially in PSYCHIATRY, Dr. James L Chiu cooperates with many other doctors and specialists in many medical groups around South Dakota.

 

 

Clay Pavlis

Clay Pavlis, MD, Psychiatrist, earned his BS in Biology after graduation Summa Com Laude from South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD. He then attended Medical School at the University of Minnesota – Duluth before transferring to the University of South Dakota School of Medicine. Dr. Pavlis went on to become board-certified in Adult Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. Pavlis’s vision for providing personalized care for residents of rural South Dakota and Minnesota, along with the goal of leading a team of providers that are focused on excellence, was the catalyst for establishing Midwest Wellness Institute in 2012. As MWI’s lead professional, Dr. Pavlis’s specialties include independent psychiatric evaluations, VA services, forensic evaluations, correctional behavioral health, workers’ compensation medical evaluations, aging mental health care, medication management, addiction medicine, neuromodulation, and psychopharmacologenomics.

 

Kelly McDermott

Kelly is a Board Certified Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner and Family Nurse Practitioner with strong skills in Psychiatry/Family Medicine/Urgent Care and outpatient settings.  She has 11 years of experience working with individuals of all ages.  She graduated from Maryville University, St. Louis, MO with MOST Master’s Certification in Mental Health in 2019, Master’s of Science in Nursing from Kaplan University in 2016.  She has been a RN since 2012.

 

Abbey Kitto

Abbey graduated Magna Cum Laude from South Dakota State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing in 2006. Following graduation, she worked as a Registered Nurse in the surgical fields of general surgery, plastic surgery, and ophthalmology. In 2010, she returned to South Dakota State University to complete the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program and graduated with her doctorate degree in August of 2015. Abbey’s specialty is guiding individuals through the battle of opioid addiction at our Suboxone treatment facility in Flandreau, SD, as well providing mental health treatment to adults in a number of different regional clinics.

 

Paula Tofte

Paula, originally from Golden Valley, ND, received her Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Mary, Bismarck, ND, in 1994 and her Master’s of Science Degree as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner from South Dakota State University, Brookings, SD, in 2011. She is Board Certified as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center and is an active member of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association. Paula’s specialty is in working with individuals in correctional facilities with a focus on mental health care, and she is currently MWI’s primary correctional facility provider throughout South Dakota and Minnesota.
